The abbreviation "TR" (stands for Transistor Rhythm) literally translates as "transistor rhythm".

Launched in the early 1980s, originally used as a demo tool for musicians in studios.

Like Roland's prior drum machines, the TR-808 didn't sound like real drums, and although it came out later than the Linn LM-1 (the first drum machine to support digital samples), it gained more popularity.
